Zero-turn lawn mowers are agile and high-performing machines for maintaining outdoor spaces like a pro. Although these are designed to last for years, you might sometimes need to restore your model to make it functional again. If you have a restoration project on hand but don’t know where to begin, we can help!

Gather Your Tools

Before starting your restoration project, get the right tools, such as a continuity tester, voltmeter, welder, screwdriver, wrench, pliers, wire cutters, sockets, and a jack that can handle your machine. You’ll also need materials for cleaning up your lawn mower’s exterior, so get primer, paint, a few brushes, sandpaper, and lubricants.

Check the Electrical System

Next, you’ll want to check your zero-turn mower’s electrical system to ensure all wires and terminals are secure and not rusted. You might also need to replace your spark plugs or ignition switch by wiring it in properly without bypassing any safety switches.

Repair Your Fuel System

Now, move to the fuel system and take pictures with your phone as you disassemble parts to aid in reassembly. You’ll want to inspect and service each part carefully before reassembling them.

Inspect the Cutting Deck

Use your jack to lift your zero-turn mower and remove the cutting deck. You should check the drive belt and replace it if it’s torn, then sharpen the mowing blade to make it functional. You’ll also want to weld the deck.

Eliminate Rust and Prepare for Painting

Once you’ve addressed the internal components, shift your focus to the exterior. Use wire brushes and sandpaper to remove rust, but avoid scrubbing too hard. Otherwise, you’ll damage the metal.

Next, you’ll want to apply a rust-resistant primer and ensure the primary coat is a temperature-resistant paint. Allow the paint to fully dry before storing your zero-turn mower.
